The Oriel site is regarded as one of the most attractive locations for a wind farm in the Irish Sea. A number of sites along the Irish east coast had been considered by Oriel before deciding on the northern area of Dundalk Bay as an appropriate location for this development. Many factors combine to make this area particularly suitable for the development of an offshore wind farm: excellent wind resource, shelter from high wave loads, insignificant tidal streams, favourable water depths, good seabed conditions and good grid access.
A suitable construction area within the licence zone was selected following environmental & engineering studies and consultations with local groups. This chosen site is 5.5km from Cooley Point, 22km from Dundalk and 14km from Clogher Head.
