National Benefits of the Oriel Windfarm

  • Helping Ireland achieve its National renewable energy targets, EU targets and Kyoto Protocol target. Offshore wind energy is the only feasible means to meet these targets thus avioding heavy EU fines.
  • Reduction of harmful greenhouse gas emissions, the proposed windfarm has the capacity to offset the production of 850,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
  • Provide energy security.
  • Reduce our dependance on imported fuel.
  • Reduce electricity price flucations already associated with fossil fuels.
  • Provide 330 Megawatts of green electricity enough to supply 250,000 homes.
  • The oriel Windfarm operating at its expected load factor of 40% or more will prevent each year the release of:
    • 360,000 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide per year.
    • 6,500 tonnes of Sulpher Dioxide per year, the main cause of acid rain.
    • 726 tonnes of Niitrous Oxides responsible for building corrosion and global warming.
    • The need to import 851,400 barrels of oil.
    • The landfilling of 23,100 tonnes of slag and ash
